Unconventional, socially awkward, detached, psychologically troubled, and at times almost animalistic, the central character in Die My Love is, above all, believable. She is fascinating to watch, yet difficult to connect with. There is pain, frustration, unfulfilled desire, and a woman who seems increasingly uncomfortable in her own skin. Her behaviour raises questions about identity, sexuality, motherhood, and the fragile boundary between love and madness.
The chemistry between the couple is deeply dysfunctional, marked by passive aggression and a growing emotional distance. They seem unable to find in each other the companionship that marriage promises. Even the presence of a dog becomes an interesting point of contrast, suggesting a search for affection elsewhere. Love may still be there, but it struggles to survive the weight of their unspoken frustrations.
The film's numerous nighttime scenes reinforce this feeling of unease, as though the characters are trapped in a world where clarity and stability are increasingly elusive. Yet, while I find the central character intriguing and her portrayal compelling, I sometimes struggle to engage with the story. The film seems to rely so heavily on madness that I am left wondering what ultimately sustains the narrative. The baby, too, remains largely unchanged throughout, which, for me, weakens an important dimension of the story.
Before him, Robert Pattinson joins a long list of characters who have struggled to cope with an emotionally unstable woman, from Peter Falk in A Woman Under the Influence to Stephen Dillane, who plays Nicole Kidman's husband in The Hours. In different ways, these men find themselves on the other side of a woman's psychological turmoil, caught between love, helplessness, and the difficulty of understanding someone who seems increasingly beyond their reach. One cannot help but feel for them.
In this deserted land of madness, love seems to offer a glimmer of hope, yet remains powerless against the constant threat of falling back into darkness.
